A John Rae Lecture in
the Old Library at Taunton School
John Rae Society

Taunton School believes in intellectual stimulation within and beyond the curriculum. To this end we have created both a Senior and a Junior scholars society.
Dr. John H. Newton
Headmaster and Chairman of the John Rae Society

The Senior Scholars Society
The senior scholars society, named after named after the distinguished previous headmaster, Dr. John Rae, is open to all those who hold an academic scholarship or any with intellectual curiosity. They meet once or twice per term. One of these events is a presentation by a public figure. In Autumn 2005, David Smith, Economics Editor of the Sunday Times, was our guest. In Spring 2006, John Ryley, Editor of Sky News presented on news editorship. In the Summer of 2006, we have invited Alex Waugh, writer and journalist, and grandson of Evelyn Waugh, to come and speak. More influential and informative figures from a range of disciplines are in the pipeline for coming terms. The point of these events is to give every pupil a chance to meet those who are shaping the world. To such events, we invite local luminaries and there is a supper afterwards when further discussion can take place.

Other Challenges
Other challenges for our scholars include participation in inter-house, local, national or international debating, acting as panel members in a school Any Questions, writing for various publications or acting as committee members for either the Tauntonian or the John Rae Society itself. Typically of TS, such activities are inclusive, challenging and demand initiative. They go hand in hand with a varied curriculum that provides intellectual challenge no matter what the ability or interest of the pupil. If our  aim is to send out young people who will shape the world in the 21st century, then we must give them the tools and the experience with which to understand the world they live in as well as the values and will to influence it for the good.
