HEADMASTER’S ITEMS
We have had an excellent start to the new school year.  The sun has shone and everyone has been busy settling into something new, whether a form or a school.

The Year 7 camping trip was a great success and Year 5 have been working very hard to ensure they do themselves justice in the La Bohèheme production.  We have already held two Welcome Evenings, the third one [Year 5 and new Year 6] is next week.  It was also encouraging to see several of you at the Parents’ Association coffee mornings: I hope their first meeting of the new year on Thursday, 20 September will be well supported.
ASSESSMENT & REPORTING POLICY
Attached is the School’s Assessment and Reporting Policy for 2007-2008 giving details of the timing for exams, assessments, reports and Parents’ Evenings.
PARENTS’ ASSOCIATION
Our first meeting of the year is to be held in the library on Thursday, 20 September at 8.20 a.m. It’s a great way to meet other parents and all are welcome to attend. The meeting will also include the election of a new Chairperson.
Parents Directory:  Your children have been given a form with this Courier to enable your telephone number and e-mail address to be   entered into   the Parents’ Directory which is produced each year voluntarily by the Parents’ Association.

If you wish your details to be included, please take the completed form [IN BLOCK CAPITALS PLEASE] directly to Miss Hawkins in the School Office.  Alternatively, your details can be e-mailed to JBut364611@aol.com directly.

PLEASE NOTE, IF THE FORM IS NOT RECEIVED BY 21 SEPTEMBER, YOUR DETAILS WILL NOT BE INCLUDED.

In the past, forms have been sent in via pupils and have not made it to the office, so please can we suggest that you deliver the form in person or use e-mail.

E NUMBERS
Last term the Chef and I took the decision to effect a  change in the food offered at break time with the specific intention of removing hydrogenated fats from the break time food. This was done for purely health reasons and because the prevalent advice is that these fats are very bad for everyone but. especially so for young children. This change involved a lot more work for the kitchen and additional costs of circa 5k per year to produce. A happy consequence of this decision is that now there are neither E numbers nor preservatives in the break time food offered. I cannot guarantee that this is the case in all the other foods we serve because these things are endemic in the prepared food industry.
Whilst every effort is made to source products free of these additives, this is not always achievable. This is because either the product is not available or because it is prohibitively expensive.
You should be aware that I consider hydrogenated fats and some preservatives are a greater danger than E numbers, and consequently my main focus has been on them. However as a parent I decry their use and I am bitterly disappointed that the FSA did not ban them last week.
