Scholarship and Award Details
Taunton Preparatory School 11+ Awards
What are 11+ awards?
Scholarships and Exhibitions recognize ability and potential.
They are awarded to pupils in Year 6 (under 11 at the 1st September) for entry into Year 7 at Taunton Preparatory School and are tenable, subject to suitable progress, through to the end of the 6th form at Taunton School.
As well as the prestige attracted to winning an award, there is a considerable benefit to parents in a fee reduction which is generally in the range of 10%-50% of fees paid. Pupils in receipt of other fee concessions [e.g. sibling discount] only receive the higher of the concessions, they do not aggregate.
Major and Minor scholarships and exhibitions [in a more limited area of expertise] are offered each year following assessment in the January of Year 6. In the region of 8-12 awards of differing values are announced shortly after the various assessments.
External candidates and pupils already at TPS are assessed in the same way.
What are awards offered for?

Major and Minor scholarships for all round performance. Exhibitions for evidence of considerable potential in either Mathematics or English.

A music audition is held and candidates should be at Grade 4 standard in their first instrument and Grade 1 in any second instrument. They will be asked to play one contrasting piece on their first instrument and one piece on their second and be prepared to sing their favourite song. The audition is followed by an interview. Candidates offering music as part of the all-rounder assessment may not be at Grade 4 or able to offer two instruments.
Drama:
Candidates are expected to perform and talk about a prepared piece of about 12 lines from a poem or play. They are then asked to read and perform a short monologue and finally improvise a mime based on a given theme.
Art:
Applicants should bring a small portfolio of work (around 10-15 pieces in all) completed over the last two years. Whilst the bulk of this should be drawing, we would also like to see any other pieces which they have been pleased with. The children will be asked to show their work in a brief, informal interview.
Applicants will also be asked to sit a one hour, still life drawing test. Materials will be provided.
Technology
Applicants are invited to bring in examples of appropriate work either in the form of models, design or photographs. They will be asked to discuss one piece of work in some detail.
